How Hebel Helped Reduce Structural Steel

On one recent project, the original plans contained a significant amount of structural steel.

However, because the home was being constructed using Hebel rather than traditional brickwork, we were able to revisit the structural design.

Since Hebel is considerably lighter than brick, the loads imposed on the structure were reduced.

This allowed the engineer to redesign certain areas and minimise the amount of structural steel required.

The result?

Significant cost savings for the client.

Replacing Steel With LVLs

In several areas, we were able to substitute steel beams with double LVLs (Laminated Veneer Lumber).

LVLs are engineered timber products that provide excellent structural performance and are commonly used in modern residential construction.

Compared to steel, double LVLs can offer:

• Similar structural capabilities for certain spans

• Lower material costs

• Faster installation

• Reduced labour requirements

• Easier handling on site

Not every steel beam can be replaced with timber, but where appropriate, these substitutions can create substantial savings without compromising structural integrity.
