What It Really Takes to Install a 5.4 Metre Single Panel Window

Large feature windows are one of the most powerful design elements in a custom home. They flood the space with natural light, create a strong architectural statement, and connect the indoors to the outdoors. But what most people do not see is the structural planning required behind the scenes to make them safe and long-lasting.


On this project, we are installing a 5.4 metre single panel glass window. This is not a lightweight installation. Because it is one solid piece of glass, it is extremely heavy and must be craned into position. With windows of this size, structural support is critical.


To prepare for it, we installed two large 6 metre steel posts on either side of the opening, with timber framing integrated between them. The window will sit precisely within this reinforced structure. These posts are not just there for alignment. They are there to prevent movement.


Without proper structural support, the weight of a window this size can cause subtle movement over time. That movement can lead to cracked glass, damaged reveals, and long-term issues that are costly to fix. Even small shifts can compromise the performance of a large panel window.


This is the kind of detail that can sometimes be underestimated during early engineering stages.
